Finally finally I got to photograph this little beauty who was born on my birthday: Quinn Colette Reeves. You’ve seen her parents’ destination wedding when they eloped to Belize and their maternity portraits. Krystal and I are cut from the same cloth and we enjoy six hour long lunch dates together at Lucky Pie. The day of Quinn’s first portrait session we had a huge garage sale going on in our yard for my sister so there were kiddos running in and out of the studio. My niece was very “helpful” in getting a smile from Quinn so I was shooting around her head several times. In the midst of chaos I long to find and freeze the serene. The magic nestled in between what feels like loud, messy, ordinary moments. Quinn is already so expressive and feisty. She is going to change the world and I cannot wait to see how.

I’m sure you recognize these two older girls as I’ve been photographing them since they were each newborns: my god-daughters, Lucia and Mercedes. I couldn’t let their cousins swoop into town for a visit without dragging them into the studio for an impromptu session. Julz and I popped into a thrift store on the way to the studio and she bought a white dress for each of the girls. We were in and out in 15 minutes. My best friend is the picture of efficiency. Somehow we wrangled a two month old newborn baby girl, a two year old (need I say more?), a bemused six year old and a pensive eight year old into relatively the same area. We didn’t get the “everyone with ankles crossed looking at the camera smiling” shot. Not even close. But that’s not really what I do. I’m not looking for or trying to create the perfect shot. I’m looking for and trying to capture the genuine. And I think we got it.

When Emily walked around the corner carrying Cooper to my studio I just about fell over! This little man put on a few pounds since I saw him last for his newborn portrait session. He’s just the cutest and happiest hunk ever. I had SO much fun photographing Cooper and laughed all the way through the edit. I can’t wait to see him again  for his one year session this fall.

Yes, indeed these are twin brothers! Joyce and I have been working to get these handsome boys in for their first photo shoot for quite a while. Between bumps, bruises, colds, ear infections, etc (sound familiar, anyone??) it took a bit longer than we’d hoped but better late than never! I LOVED meeting these two! John is still recovering from a chest cold + ear infection so he wasn’t his usual cheery self. But he is the more reserved and observant of the two so I think these images are still a good representation of their personalities. Fingers crossed I’ll get to work with these guys again!

I feel like I JUST met Lily as a newborn. Suddenly she was four months old. And then a second later she was eight months old. Geeze. Where does it go? The life of a photographer is such a blur. Of time, not focus. Her trusty big brother, Luke, was looking out for her in the chair and blockading her fall. A surprise visitor half way into the shoot was VERY exciting for her! And while we focused on Miss Lily, Luke’s routine for these sessions consists of good behavior for the first 10 minutes and then down to our basement for 101 Dalmatians (which he always takes home to finish). Big happy group shot of the whole gang at the end and voile! Just like that, her first year of sessions is wrapped with a pretty pink bow.

I had the privilege of meeting this sweet little girl just two weeks after she was born. She was very polite when she awoke to find me smiling down at her with a big black camera. Not so sure about stripping down for her first photo shoot with Recherche Photography but I sweetened the deal with a SUPER soft brown blanket which seemed to do the trick for the couple minutes I needed. I was smitten by her big grey eyes and the folds of her beautiful baby skin. Seems her parents are quite taken in as well. They are doing The Baby’s First Year package so look for more photos of this little beauty in the coming months.

The daddy in this set of images is my little brother in-law and his gorgeous Australian family. They make the trek here to Colorado every couple years, each time with a new mesmerizing kiddo in tow. Tristan is our precocious and extremely active three year old nephew. Boy was he a trick to get in focus this time around. Typical of this age but whoa! Kayden is only 10 months – a pensive chilled out little sweetheart. Jay says he is a mini Yoda. Bit of a momma’s boy, but who can blame him?? I was ecstatic to get the shots of them sitting on the porch looking right at me. Trick: I told Tristan he could sprint off the steps as soon as I counted to 100 as fast as I could. Kayden was also mildly interested in the trick but quickly became bored. But at least I managed to keep his attention for about 30 seconds. I missed them the minute they walked out the door. Saving our pennies for a trip to the Outback.

This set is such a kick. What I really love is it shows how crazy in love they are all with each other and what wonderful parents they are. Fills me up and over the brim.

Every so often I experience doubt in the quality of my own work. OK, maybe more often than that. Jay just grins at me after 12 years when I swear off photography and wonder aloud about what else I could pursue. This little photo session with Kate and Alice was a breath of fresh air and renewed, once again, my hope in my photographic eye. Natural light, 50mm f/1.2 and beautiful little girls that I adore. Very very happy with the results. I guess I’ll shoot for a few more months.
