Cat’s parents hosted the rehearsal dinner in their backyard.
One of Cat’s bridesmaids took their wedding logo to a baker and had this cake made!!  

Cat’s father grew up in the Powel Crosley Estate, which has since become a historical museum. It was a dream come true for Cat to be able to have her wedding here. She wrote a captivating description of her thoughts on her wedding website. Incidentally, this mansion is where they filmed Great Expectations several years ago- before they did a major renovation!

I have played it safe for a decade by positioning myself at the end of the aisle to get the shot of the bride walking down with her father. I had just said to Cat, “see you at the end!” and then at the last second changed my mind. I dashed up the stairs just in time to catch Cat before she descended the staircase. When I rushed in she started laughing and said, “I KNEW you’d change your mind!” This image was worth that wild dash!
This is Cat’s adorable hairstylist (one of the many as far as I can tell!)
Greg is a phenomenal artist and painted all the signs for the event!
I think Greg almost lost his eye running down this precarious path! They said people were flailing the sparklers every which way and I had to yell at everyone right before the couple came down to get OFF the path and make some room! This was the ONLY semi-focused shot I could manage, but very happy with it and think it is so fun!
And the grand finale: Cat & Greg depart on her father’s boat. Lovely!
As I was flying across the country to photograph this event for Cat & Greg a day-after photo shoot was absolutely required.

Here I am on a Saturday night- and a holiday weekend no less, hunkered in at my computer editing. And quite frankly feeling sorry for myself. I spent the day painting the trim in my new studio space (a bit too tedious for my taste, but Jay never complained so how could I??). Then took the pups for a walk and realized I have not mastered the training technique for teaching a dog to “heel” and it all unraveled from there. I hate to break it to the everyone (besides my mother and Jon & Juli), but Regina’s life is not all flowers and sunshine. She puts up a pretty good front but is slightly obsessive compulsive, perfectionist, prone to bouts of extreme impatience, frustration and melancholy. But let’s face it- aren’t those some essential qualities for any great artist? Self-loathing, despair, emotional disparity seem to be vital ingredients for great works of art!

As any wedding photographer will probably tell you, the first run through a wedding edit is HARD. Hundreds of images to get through, so many NOT good ones. But once you cull through and start working with only the solid shots the process is much more pleasant. Tonight I am still in the initial culling stage of Jake & Meadow’s wedding, about to pour another glass of wine and BAM, here was this shot. It took my breath away and filled my heart with a deep deep sense of God’s purpose in my life. I’ve known Jake a very long time and practically forced him to let me shoot his wedding. And I believe this shot is the reason why. Maybe you’d have to know Jake to understand why this is such a fabulous image of him. Meadow is an absolute dream to photograph, but this image in particular is so natural of her. I am not a fancy photographer. And while I’m playing the honest game on my blog, I don’t know jack about the technicalities of my craft. But this should not be a news flash as I’ve been blatantly admitting it for 10 years. I am in awe of so many other photographers and artists and feel often that what I do is so not impressive. My brother was the brilliant artist. And my sister the beauty. I was the charismatic one. But I think this image is a reminder to myself about what my work is all about: creating the space for people to let down their guard and be completely at ease with who they are. Before every single shoot I ask that God would give me His eyes, that He would show me the person He loves, who He created them to be, how He sees them. I will never be a technical shooter. I feel I almost shoot blindly, instinctively, trying to capture the moments in between when the most genuine childlike nature of a person feels it is safe to peek out. 

Jake & Meadow: I hope you are both having a wonderful time in Hawaii!! I’ll have the rest of your wedding up in just a few days!! Thank you again for sharing your apartment with us! Hope you didn’t care too much about that couch… (j/k) Love!

Ok, now fast forward a few years. About 20 weddings under my belt by now and an unbelievable amount of mistakes, mishaps and falling flat on my face. Daily motto is, “come on Regina, just make it to the end of the day.” People continue booking me so I am tottering forward. I remember the day Wendy called me. She was “obsessed with photography, had seen my work and loved it. Wondered if I could photograph her reception in Evergreen.” Sure! Reception…where’s the wedding? “Oh, Mark and I are eloping! Our dream is to get married in a castle in Ireland!” My best friend was in the room with me at the time and I covered up the phone and whispered, “I’m going to shoot a wedding in Ireland!!!!!”

But I didn’t really believe it in my gut until I was on the plane- already missing one of my bags in NY, completely over-packed and headed for my second trip to Europe, first time traveling alone. Would I shoot a destination wedding by myself again? NO WAY. Do I regret this trip? NO WAY. I wish I had known what I was doing a little better. I wish I had had the camera and lenses I have now, but in spite of it all, I think I pulled this one off. It is so amazing to think back on all this. I exist so much in the future- planning, dreaming, scheming. Very rarely do I look back. I’m so glad I’m taking the time to do this and I hope you are all enjoying the ride along with me.

It is also worth noting that I traveled through Ireland for about 9 days before I arrived at the castle to shoot their wedding. In that time I had come to realize/admit to myself that I was in love with Joseph James Mountjoy and wanted to marry him, found the skirt I have worn to almost every single wedding I have photographed these last 7 years in a consignment store in Dublin, lost at least 8 pounds due to a $4 food budget for entire trip and walking a hundred miles lugging 5x more baggage than I should have ever had plus a painting I bought in Galway. I always think Wendy looks just like Judy Garland in this shot!

My experiment with infrared film could have gone better. Forgot to hand check it through security- and probably didn’t expose it correctly anyway. But I still like the way these last two came out!  

Wendy & Mark: thank you a billion times over for trusting me to photograph your dream come true. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life and has been so fun to reminisce. I wish you the very happiest anniversary!!
